About Mouth Guards
Custom mouth guards are an effective solution for protecting your teeth from damage caused by sports or teeth grinding (bruxism). Made from durable materials, these mouth guards are designed for a comfortable and secure fit, ensuring optimal protection without sacrificing comfort.
The process starts with a consultation, where your dentist assesses your needs and takes impressions of your teeth to create a custom-fit mouth guard tailored to your mouth’s contours. Once ready, your dentist will fit the mouth guard and make any necessary adjustments.
With a properly fitted mouth guard, you can confidently engage in sports or sleep soundly, knowing your smile is protected. With regular check-ups, you can maintain the longevity and effectiveness of your mouth guard, helping to protect your smile for years to come.

Who needs a custom mouth guard?
Custom mouth guards are recommended for athletes in contact sports (like rugby, boxing, or hockey) to prevent dental injuries, as well as for individuals who grind their teeth at night (bruxism). They offer superior protection compared to store-bought options.
How long does a custom mouth guard last?
With proper care, a high-quality custom mouth guard can last 2–5 years. However, we recommend bringing it to your regular dental check-ups so we can assess its condition and recommend replacement if needed.
Is a custom mouth guard comfortable to wear?
Yes! Unlike generic boil-and-bite guards, custom mouth guards are made from soft yet durable materials and moulded precisely to your teeth for a snug, comfortable fit—so you can breathe, speak, and sleep without irritation.
How do I clean and maintain my mouth guard?
Rinse it with cool water after each use and brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap. Store it in a ventilated case to prevent bacteria build-up. Avoid hot water, which can warp the material.
Why should I choose a custom-made guard over a shop-bought one?
A custom-made guard from your dentist is professionally fitted to the exact shape of your teeth. This offers superior comfort, retention, and protection. It doesn’t impede breathing or speech like ill-fitting, bulky shop-bought versions can.
I grind my teeth at night. Do I need a guard?
Yes, a night guard (or bruxism splint) is highly recommended. It creates a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth, preventing wear, fractures, and tooth sensitivity caused by grinding and clenching. It can also help reduce muscle strain in your jaw.
What are mouth guards made from?
Our custom-made guards are fabricated from a durable, yet comfortable, medical-grade acrylic or thermoplastic material. They are designed to be strong enough to absorb impact but soft enough to wear comfortably for extended periods.
Are mouth guards only for contact sports?
While essential for contact sports like rugby and boxing, they are also highly recommended for any activity with a risk of falls or collisions, including hockey, basketball, skateboarding, and even non-contact sports like gymnastics.
Can children wear mouth guards?
Absolutely. In fact, it is crucial for children participating in sports. As children’s mouths are constantly changing, they may need a new guard more frequently than adults to ensure a proper, protective fit.
How is a custom guard made?
The process is simple and painless. We take an impression or a digital scan of your teeth. This mould is then sent to a dental laboratory where your bespoke, high-quality guard is fabricated to our precise prescription
Is it difficult to talk or breathe with a guard in?
A well-fitted, custom-made guard is designed to be thin and snug. After a short adjustment period, most people find they can talk and breathe normally with it in place. This is a significant advantage over ill-fitting shop-bought options.
How much does a custom mouth guard cost?
The cost of a custom guard is a worthwhile investment in protecting your oral health. It is more expensive than a shop-bought version but offers far superior protection, comfort, and longevity. Prices typically start from £150-£250. We will provide a exact quote during your appointment.
Are mouth guards available on the NHS?
Mouth guards for sports are not available on the NHS. Night guards to prevent damage from grinding may be provided on the NHS under a Band 3 course of treatment if a dentist deems it clinically necessary, but there is often a waiting list. Private treatment offers immediate access and more material choices.
What should I do if my mouth guard gets damaged?
If it cracks, breaks, or becomes loose, stop using it immediately and contact us. A damaged guard will not protect you effectively. We can often repair it or will need to take a new impression to make a replacement.
Do I still need to wear a guard if I have dentures or implants?
If you have dental implants or a bridge, protecting them from impact during sport is highly advisable. If you grind your teeth and have dentures, you may be grinding on the dentures themselves, which can cause wear and jaw pain. We can advise on the best solution for your situation.
