About Bridges

Dental bridges are a simple and effective way to replace missing teeth. They work by using one or more artificial teeth, called pontics, to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth. These pontics are attached to the teeth on either side of the gap, known as abutment teeth. First, the dentist prepares the abutment teeth to ensure they can support the bridge. Then, a custom-made bridge is created to match the shape and colour of your natural teeth.

Once in place, bridges restore your smile and make it easier to chew and speak. This means you can enjoy your favorite foods and talk confidently without worrying about your teeth. With a well-fitted bridge, you’ll feel more comfortable in social situations, knowing your smile looks natural and complete.

What is a dental bridge and how does it work?

A dental bridge fills the gap left by missing teeth by anchoring a false tooth (or teeth) between two crowns placed on your natural teeth or implants. This restores your smile, chewing function, and prevents surrounding teeth from shifting.

With proper care, dental bridges typically last 10-15 years. Maintaining good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups will help extend their lifespan.

The procedure is usually pain-free, as we use local anaesthesia. You may experience mild sensitivity or discomfort after the treatment, but this is temporary and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief if needed.

Most patients with one or more missing teeth are candidates, provided the supporting teeth or implants are strong enough. During your consultation, we’ll assess your oral health to determine if a bridge is the best solution for you.

The main types are:

  • Traditional fixed bridge: The most common type, involving crowns on the teeth either side of the gap, with a false tooth (pontic) in between.

  • Cantilever bridge: Used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the missing tooth.

  • Maryland bonded bridge (resin-bonded bridge): A conservative option where a false tooth is held in place by a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the backs of the adjacent teeth.

  • Implant-supported bridge: As the name suggests, the bridge is supported by dental implants rather than natural teeth.

Bridges are commonly made from porcelain fused to high-strength metal (PFM), or entirely from strong, tooth-coloured ceramic materials like zirconia, which provide excellent aesthetics and durability.

The process typically requires two appointments. During the first visit, the abutment teeth are prepared, impressions are taken, and a temporary bridge is fitted. The custom-made permanent bridge is then fitted and adjusted at the second appointment, usually 2-3 weeks later.

A bridge requires excellent oral hygiene. It must be cleaned daily like your natural teeth, with careful brushing and flossing. It is crucial to clean under the false tooth using special floss threaders or interdental brushes to prevent decay and gum disease in the supporting teeth.

Yes, in many cases a bridge can be repaired or re-cemented if it becomes loose. It is important to contact us immediately if this happens so we can assess it and prevent damage to the underlying teeth.

A bridge is designed to restore normal function. After a short adjustment period, it should feel natural and will significantly improve your ability to eat and speak compared to having a gap.

The cost varies significantly depending on the type of bridge, the materials used, and the complexity of the case. A traditional bridge is typically less expensive than an implant-supported bridge. We will always provide a detailed written treatment plan and cost estimate before any treatment begins.

Dental bridges are available on the NHS if a dentist clinically assesses that you need one. However, you will be charged the applicable NHS Band fee. They are also available privately, which often offers a wider choice of materials and techniques. We will discuss all your options with you.

The main alternatives for replacing missing teeth are a partial denture (which is removable) or a dental implant (which is fixed and replaces the tooth root as well as the crown). We can discuss the pros and cons of each option during your consultation.

There is no downtime. You can return to work and normal activities immediately after your appointment. We advise avoiding very hard or sticky foods for the first 24 hours after the permanent bridge is cemented to allow the adhesive to set fully.
