About Dental Implants

Dental implants are a modern solution for replacing missing teeth. They consist of three parts: a titanium post (which acts like a tooth root), an abutment (connector), and a custom crown (the visible tooth). The titanium post is surgically placed into your jawbone, where it fuses with the bone over time, creating a strong and stable foundation.

Unlike dentures or bridges, implants are permanent, look and feel like natural teeth, and don’t require special care—just brush and floss as usual! They also help maintain jawbone health, preventing bone loss that often occurs with missing teeth.

Whether you’re missing one tooth or several, dental implants can restore your smile, improve chewing and speaking, and boost your confidence.

What exactly is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small, medical-grade titanium post that is surgically placed into your jawbone to act as a replacement for a missing tooth root. Once integrated with the bone, it provides a secure foundation for a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture.

Implants are the closest thing to a natural tooth. They preserve your jawbone, don’t require altering healthy adjacent teeth (as a bridge does), and provide unrivalled stability and function compared to removable dentures. They are a long-term, standalone solution.

Most healthy adults with sufficient jawbone density are candidates. However, factors like gum disease, uncontrolled diabetes, or smoking may affect eligibility. A thorough consultation, including scans, will determine if implants are right for you.

The timeline varies, but typically ranges from 3–6 months. This includes healing after implant placement (osseointegration) and crown attachment. Temporary teeth may be provided during this period.

Local anesthesia ensures you feel no pain during surgery. Post-procedure discomfort (swelling, mild pain) is normal but manageable with medication. Most patients resume normal activities within a few days.

Treat them like natural teeth—brush, floss, and attend regular check-ups. Avoid chewing hard items (e.g., ice) to protect the crown. With proper care, implants can last 20+ years or a lifetime.

For the first few days, stick to soft, cool foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, and soup (not too hot). Avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could irritate the implant site. As healing progresses (usually within 1–2 weeks), you can gradually return to your normal diet, but chew on the opposite side until the implant fully integrates.

For 48 hours, avoid hot drinks (like coffee or tea) and alcohol, as they can increase swelling or disrupt healing. Stay hydrated with cool water instead. After the initial healing phase, you can resume these beverages in moderation.

When performed by a trained and experienced clinician, dental implant surgery has a very high success rate, consistently reported in clinical studies as over 95% over a 10-year period.

With proper care and excellent oral hygiene, the titanium implant itself can last a lifetime. The attached crown or bridge may eventually need replacement due to wear and tear, much like a natural tooth, typically after 10-15 years or more.

If you have experienced bone loss, procedures such as bone grafting or a sinus lift can often be performed to create a solid foundation for an implant. We will assess this and discuss all possible options with you during your consultation.

Dental implant treatment is not routinely available on the NHS. It is considered a private treatment option. In very exceptional circumstances following an accident or major surgery, the NHS may provide funding, but this is rare.

As with any surgical procedure, there are minimal risks, such as infection, nerve irritation, or sinus issues. These are uncommon, and we use advanced 3D imaging to meticulously plan your treatment to minimise any risks.

Yes, absolutely. Implants can be used to securely anchor dentures in place. This can be done with just a few implants per jaw, transforming the stability, comfort, and chewing efficiency of dentures. This is known as an implant-retained overdenture.

No. The implant itself is hidden beneath the gum. The visible part is a custom-made crown that is carefully designed to match the colour, shape, and translucency of your natural teeth, making it virtually indistinguishable.
